The basics are important in everything.
In badminton, quick movements are often required, so mastering the fundamentals is key to preventing injuries, reducing fatigue, and most importantly, improving your skills.
How to Grip Your Racket
First, let’s start with the most basic of basics: how to hold the racket.
There are two grips: the forehand and the backhand.
Both grips are essential, so make sure to master them.
Overhead stroke / Underhand stroke
Once you’ve got the grip, the next step is to learn the basic strokes.
There are two main types: the overhead stroke, where you swing the racket down from above, and the underhand stroke, where you hit the shuttle from below.
Since both strokes are frequently used, make sure to master them as well.
Next, you’ll use these strokes to execute various basic shots.
The basic shots are explained in detail in a separate article.
Shuttle Throw
It can be hard to tell if you’re executing the strokes correctly on your own.
That’s why shuttle tossing is highly recommended.
By practicing this consistently, you’ll improve your technique significantly.
Footwork
Are you able to return those clears that push you to the back of the court? Are you able to get to those drop shots that land near the net?
If not, the reason could be that you haven’t mastered your footwork yet.
For beginners who have never played badminton, footwork is the hardest part to grasp, but once you do, it makes the game a lot more enjoyable. Being able to move quickly around the court will help you retrieve even those tricky shots.
Footwork is honestly the most important skill. Make sure to master it!
Other Practices
Here are some practice routines you can try during your free time!
These exercises will help improve your skills even when you’re off the court.
Shuttle Scooping
Shuttle scooping is a technique where you scoop the shuttle with your racket.
It’s a great way to get familiar with the racket and improve your handling skills.
Make sure everyone practices this—it’s an excellent exercise to get comfortable with your racket!
